For four straight years, from 2012 to 2015, Washington State Investment Board committed to just five types of private market funds each year. That trend changed in 2016, when the pension committed to seven.
In all, WSIB committed $3.6 billion across 14 funds in 2016. That became the pension’s highest committed total since 2012, a record it shortly held until it committed $5.2 billion in 2018.
Mega Buyout funds received the largest share of WSIB’s 2016 commitment, with $1.2 billion being committed across three funds. The pension also committed to three Mid Buyout funds, three Large Buyout funds, and a Small Buyout fund, in addition to two Growth Equity funds and a Distressed Debt fund.
