Chicago Bars and Restaurants Defy Shutdown Order Despite COVID-19 Surge

Bars and restaurants in Chicago and its surrounding suburbs have chosen to defy a new order to shutdown indoor service, as COVID-19 surges around the country force other states to weigh new safety measures.

On October 26, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker informed restaurants and bars in several counties that they could continue takeout, delivery, and outdoor service. But in the wake of a COVID-19 surge he demanded they close indoor dining, regardless of their safety protocols.

Some establishments have opted to disregard the order outright. Others are considering the risks versus rewards of staying open. A second shutdown could put some of these establishments out of business, according to the Chicago Tribune.
