President-elect Joe Biden named Katherine Tai on Dec. 10 as his administration's pick for the United States' top trade representative. Tai currently serves as the top Democratic trade counsel for the House Ways and Means Commission. She oversaw trade enforcement with China during the Obama administration.
As an Asian American, Tai would be the first woman of color to serve as the USTR. She is also fluent in Mandarin.
In choosing Tai, the Biden team likely signaled a return to multilateral trade. This is in order to advance U.S. trade interests and confront growing economic challenges from China.
