US Firm GIP Buys Mexican Saavi Energia From Big British Equity Firm

Energy plant and money

United States firm, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), has closed the deal to buy 100% of Saavi Energía. This deal is an outcome of a loan that GIP granted to Saavi Energia at the end of 2020. The loan is worth about $325 million, which moves directly into the acquisition value. But the final transaction value has not been revealed. So GIP has transformed the loan into a purchase. Thus, this deal becomes the first direct investment of GIP in Mexico.

In 2018 ACTIS, a British private equity firm purchased International Generating Company “InterGen” for $1,256 billion and renamed it Saavi Energia. At the time, it was the largest purchase by ACTIS. Further, they acquired Saavi to comply with their strategy of creating "scalable energy businesses in key growth markets."
