The Roman Catholic Diocese of Norwich, Conn. on July 15 filed a petition for its reorganization and bankruptcy. In a statement on its website, the church described the action as the most equitable way to resolve more than 60 pending lawsuits filed against the diocese alleging the sexual abuse of boys of the Academy at Mount Saint John in Deep River.
Michael R. Cote, the head bishop, stated that they "will work diligently with all survivors, creditors, and ministries to maintain open communication while we work toward a settlement and a restructuring plan that includes a comprehensive resolution for survivors." He added that there are more than 30 other institutions facing similar allegations that have taken similar steps.
