Ireland's Data Protection Commission has fined WhatsApp €225 million for failing to adhere to data protection rules. WhatsApp is an instant messaging platform owned by Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook Inc.

The Commission charged WhatsApp with failure to inform European users how it processes users' information. Furthermore, they were no clear details on what the data will be used for. WhatsApp shares information about its users like phone numbers and IP addresses with Facebook.
The initial fine was €30 million but was rejected by other data regulators in the EU. The current fine of €225 million is to date the biggest fine imposed by the Data Protection Commission.
