RJ Scaringe launched his start-up Rivian with a focus on electric vehicles in 2009. Based in Irvine, California, the company received a large investment, grew significantly in 2015 and opened a research facility in Michigan and Bay Area.
A year later, the company acquired former Mitsubishi Motors manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois for $16 million.
Two Products
in 2017, the company revealed the first two products: an electric five-passenger pick-up truck and an electric seven-passenger SUV. Initially named as A1T and A1C, respectively. The models were renamed R1S and R1T. They were on show at the LA Auto Show in November 2018. The company also planned production in 2020.
