The real estate industry output shrank 2.9% in Q4 of 2021 compared to 1.6% in the previous quarter. During the same period, the construction industry experienced a 2.1% decline as well. Since 2008, neither sector has ever experienced a consecutive quarterly decline.
Due to the housing slump and weak consumer spending, the Chinese economy had the weakest growth in Q4 of 2021. Gross Domestic Product grew by 4% in the same period compared to 4.9% in Q3 of 2021. Industrial production growth slightly increased during that period, but retail sales sharply slowed.
