On July 9, a bankruptcy judge denied a proposed $35 million settlement between the Roman Catholic Diocese and its insurers. The decision was a win for the creditors' committee members, who felt the settlement fell short of what abuse claimants were owed.
And it could set a precedent for other dioceses that have also filed for bankruptcy protection.
However, in a seeming win for the diocese, the judge also denied a request for 21 cases to go to a jury trial. The creditor's committee argued that those cases could establish the value of the other 485 claims.
