Wastage and the loss of food in the United States is a never-ending problem. Over one-third of the food intended for human consumption goes to waste.
The U.S. discards more food than any other country in the world. It is said to throw away nearly 80 billion pounds (40 million tons) of food each year. This equates to about 40% of the entire U.S. food supply.
In 2018, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated that 68% of the food waste generated ended up in landfills or combustion facilities. As a result, the water used for food production also ends up going to waste.
The EPA expressed in its latest report: "Not only does this waste resources used to produce food, but it also creates a myriad of environmental impacts."
