Sri Lanka’s External Debt is More Than $50 Billion

The worst economic crisis hits Sri Lanka with people not having access to fuel and other essential commodities. Sri Lanka with a population of around 22 million, is suffering due to political corruption and economic downfall since its independence in 1948.

The crisis started when the Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksha, after winning the presidential election in 2019, reduced taxes recklessly. These impractical policies along with COVID-19 have destroyed the economy leaving people in a difficult position.

The then Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera warned that the President’s decision could lead the country to a financial crisis. However, Rajapaksha went ahead with his decision.
